We used to play Warcraft II on custom maps as kids. Eventually we got into one that was just two sides with tons of resources but divided by an impassable barrier of water and rock. The geography forced you into air combat and air defense. The map would take all day to play because you had to set up multiple well-defended mines, huge aviaries for dragons, constantly build/repair towers, and basically do your best to out-spend and out-resource your opponent with a massive strategic war. Each side would launch huge bombing raids against the other, typically fail to accomplish anything, and start over again. It got easy to get the rank of "Demigod" or "God" without even really trying.
We wondered if there was a rank beyond this and to determine if there was, we made a custom map that consisted of a single human village and four orc villages. The orc bands had plenty of mines with plenty of gold in each. They would follow their AI's routine: get enough gold to build a peon, make new peon go and gather wood. To make sure that never happened, I put guard towers around their forest. So the AI would do nothing but make peons and send them to die in a hail of arrows. They could never get enough lumber to build a barracks, so they could never get troops to attack the towers. This was the automated killing machine. I put the thing on and let it run for a day and then some. At the end, I sent in some human warriors to destroy the enemy villages, and the rank it gave me was "Developer."
That's kind of lame, Blizzard. Fuck you guys.
