I'd rather say to these lunatics that they should try raising their child in a sane setting. Tell the child the truth: they are a boy, not a girl (or whatever). Let the child decide when they have a far better understanding of the implications of the decision they're about to make. Don't leave this up to eight year-olds (dude). I'd play with my cousins my little pony things as a child (granted they did more racing/stunts in my version of the game). No one thought I wanted my balls lopped because I briefly wasn't 100% focused on trucks and guns.
I'm convinced the parents are behind all of this.
