I found a bunch of stuff I really like recently. There's still hope for music in my mind.

The only good music is classical music.

Classical music is a joke too. Basically it's a "The Very Best of" several centuries worth of work. Do you think all of that music made in that time was good? There's no way. They can talk of the various masters and why they sound good from a scientific standpoint, but in the end, it's just a case of monkeys working at typewriters combined with our poor record keeping. If we dug, I'm sure we could find piles of utterly mediocre work even in the catalogs of so-called masters. That's not even delving into the realm of long-forgotten and mediocre-to-begin-with composers of the era whose work managed to survive to this day by random chance. Then you have to consider all that work that was not even worth saving.

In conclusion: fuck ALL music. All of it. I'm going to drive a nail into each ear so I don't have to hear any of it.

I think music is suffering the same problem a lot of things are suffering currently, that's not to say that all music coming out today is 100% bad. I don't think anyone with half a brain would jump to assumptions like that, it's mainly a generalization.

Imagine a fast paced, intricate guitar solo and compare it to a emotive, moving piece played on guitar. One is technically impressive and flashy but not particularly emotive, the other is soulful and emotive, but not very flashy.

I think we're seeing this trend in everything from anime to movies to technology; progress moves like this. We have a few decades with lots of creativity and out-of-the-box ideas and another few decades where we build upon technical skills.

Technology at the moment has been building on pre-existing concepts; increasing portability and speed and efficiency. Anime has improved quality of animation but often leaves a hollow feeling. Movies have increased CGI effects and 3D, but the plots themselves leave a lot to be desired.

It's a conflict between technical skills and creative thought, many people will tell you music/anime/movies are better than ever before; I think this is just because it is easier to map technical improvements instead of creative ones.

This post ran on a little longer than I intended, the simple key is a balance of these two things.
