I hate this debate almost as much as I hate the God thing. It's mostly trolling, and that's fine too…

But seriously, for old ladies and teenaged girls, the Macintosh is an ideal tool. If you're a man, it's kind of like carrying a purse, but then again, what do I care what you carry around? Go ahead and walk around with a huge pink teddy bear at all times. Refer to it by name. Insist other people refer to it by name and carry on conversations with it on the train. Occasionally consult it for advice, go wide-eyed and pale at its supposed reply, shout “No! I won't do that! Not again!”… er, what the fuck was I talking about?

Anyway… Macintosh. They've always been good at controlling quality. The product works out of the box without a hitch. Well, at least with fewer hitches than any PC. They have trusted suppliers that supply quality components. With a PC, any fool can make parts as long as they're compliant… they don't have to be good. Hell, they need not even be guaranteed not to start a fire. The trade off is always price…

In fact, I think it speaks wonders for our society that Apple managed to find a niche market that can best be described as “incompetent and rich.” We've come so far that we can make a high tech product that works without much hassle right out of the box and yet at the same time, we can't produce high tech users… which I guess would make the need for such products unnecessary.

As for Linux, it's basically more a hobby than an operating system, and has been for a long time… at least in desktop applications. It isn't faster or better than Windows or Mac and it still remains a huge hassle for day-to-day use. Is there a future in it? Oh yes… just wait for it.

2016 Update

Here are a few things rarer than unicorns:

  • An iPhone without a cracked screen
  • An iPhone with more than 50% battery life that isn't currently plugged in
  • An iPhone with more than 10% free storage space

All this and more for $650!

Yeah, I'm not entirely convinced about the quality suppliers/build anymore.

2017 Update

New and improved for 2017/18:

  • “New” has been redefined as “available for 2-4 years on competitors' products.”
  • Still no external storage. Because the cloud, or whatever. That's it. We're not lying. Shut up.
  • Battery life not even approaching meh levels. Still.

All this and more for $999!

Sadly, despite deserving it so hard, this thing will never go out of business because of all of the money they made back when they were briefly cutting edge and the much longer period of time that people believed they were cutting edge.
